YOU CAN CHANGE THE WORLD

In January 2003, my Marine Corps Reserve Unit was called up to active duty. We were being sent to Iraq for a one year deployment. My daughter, Georgia, was only two years old, just beginning to communicate. There was no way for her to understand what was going on, although she could obviously sense something wasn’t normal. We all cried as we said goodbye, trying to be brave for each other.

When we were deployed for war, mail became the most important and joyful event of my life because it kept me connected to my family back home. We fought hard and moved fast in Iraq. The mail seemed to catch up to us about once a week. One day, I had a record-setting sixteen packages waiting on the hood of our HUMMV. The Marines would ask, “How can you get so many packages?” I explained that almost all of them were from people at my church, most of whom I didn’t even know. This was especially interesting to one of my Marines who did not attend church or believe in God. I received packages and cards from many people telling how they were all praying for me. That kind of support changed my world. It reminded me about what was important in life.

Family is so important! I wondered how they were doing while I was so far away. It was a comfort to know people in the church and Sunday school class were looking out for my wife and daughter, Kelly and Georgia. I was grateful they were not alone. Knowing that Lovers Lane Church was there for our family made it easier for me to do my duties. The appreciation and reassurance I felt knowing that I had not left my wife and child alone made an extreme difference in my life. It changed my world to know that God was with them and me simultaneously on opposite sides of the world. It also changed my world to know that Lovers Lane Church was with me through their cards, letters, packages and prayers and simultaneously with my wife and daughter, caring and praying for them, too. The world changes when ordinary people place their trust in an extraordinary God. You can change the world, too.
